 Ralph Northam (Virginia’s Governor) organized a special legislative session close to six weeks after a gunman’s rampage in Virginia Beach. Northam’s proposal included background checks on all firearms sales and transactions, a ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, bump stocks and silencers, and reinstate a law that would allow just one handgun purchase within a thirty-day period. A part of this plan also included an Extreme Risk Protective Order that would allow law enforcement and the courts to temporarily take away firearms from a person that exhibited dangerous behavior and presented an immediate threat to themselves or others. Northam wanted local governments to enact even stricter laws than state law. However, the GOP-controlled Legislature rejected all proposals. In November, all 140 seats are up for election so depending on the newly elected officials, the tide can surely turn on legislation for gun control in Virginia.
